Laser Hair Removal Q & A

What is laser hair removal?

At The Medical Dock, Dr. Ahmad uses a concentrated light beam, or laser, or get rid of unwanted body hair. During treatment, laser light energy converts to heat and damages hair follicles. This inhibits future hair growth or delays it so you can experience smooth, hair-free skin for long time periods or indefinitely. Laser hair removal:

  • Removes unwanted hair in undesirable areas
  • Gets rid of peach fuzz on your face
  • Eliminates the need to shave, pluck, and wax
  • Reduces razor bumps and irritation

If hair does grow back, it’s usually lighter, finer, and less dense. Hair removal works on any skin type but is most effective for people with darker hair and light-colored skin.

Which areas does laser hair removal treat?

Using advanced laser hair removal techniques, Dr. Ahmad can get rid of unwanted body hair on your:

  • Legs
  • Armpits
  • Upper lip
  • Chin
  • Bikini line
  • Back
  • Chest
  • Shoulders

An exception is your eyelids and the area surrounding them, but the aesthetics experts at The Medical Dock can remove excess hair on just about any other area of your body.

What should I expect during treatment?

After reviewing your medical history and completing a skin evaluation, Dr. Ahmad lets you know if you’re a good candidate for laser hair removal.

If it’s a good match for you, Dr. Ahmad and The Medical Dock team may shave an area of your skin prior to treatment. You’ll wear special goggles to protect your eyes from the laser’s light, and they may apply a topical numbing cream to make the procedure more comfortable.

During treatment, Dr. Ahmad uses a laser instrument containing a cooling device. When laser energy passes through your skin to the hair follicles, you might feel a sensation of warm pinpricks followed by cooling from the device. The procedure may take just minutes for small areas or over an hour for larger areas.

What happens after laser hair removal?

After laser hair removal, you might experience redness or swelling for several hours. You can apply ice to the area as needed to reduce discomfort, or Dr. Ahmad can apply a steroid cream to your skin. Hair doesn’t immediately fall out but begins to shed several days or weeks after treatment.

You’ll likely require a series of 2-6 treatments every 4-16 weeks as needed to achieve desired results.

When you’re ready to get rid of unsightly hair in areas you shave or pluck regularly, schedule a free laser hair removal consultation with Dr. Ahmad at The Medical Dock by phone or online today.
